TSUNEISHI-China Launched Methanol Dual-Fuelled 5,900TEU Type Container Carrier
-Largest Container Vessel Built by the TSUNEISHI Group-
TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan) is pleased to announce that TSUNEISHI GROUP (ZHOUSHAN) SHIPBUILDING INC. (hereinafter “TZS”), its manufacturing base in China, successfully launched the Methanol Dual-Fuelled 5,900TEU Type Container Carrier on 27 August 2025. This vessel will be delivered on February 2026.
The newly launched 5,900 TEU type container carrier is the largest of its kind ever built by the Group, capable of accommodating up to 5,915 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers both in the hold and on deck. In response to the growing demand for refrigerated transport in recent years, the vessel can also carry up to 1,400 reefer containers. Alongside an improved hull form and the Group’s proprietary energy-saving technology, MT-FAST*1, the adoption of a large-capacity shaft generator enables this dual-fuel vessel to achieve both top-class loading capacity and outstanding fuel efficiency, even when compared with conventional fuel oil vessels in the same segment.
This vessel has been developed based on the concept of a “final solution” towards achieving zero CO₂ emissions through the use of green methanol*2. Not only the main engine but also the on-board generators – including the HiMSEN engine (8H32DF-LM) manufactured by HD Hyundai – are capable of operating on methanol fuel. In addition, the vessel is equipped with systems compatible with large-capacity shore power supply, enabling the generators to be shut down while in port, thereby further accelerating CO₂ reduction.
TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING will continue to advance the practical application of methanol dual-fuelled vessels, with the ongoing aim of realising carbon neutrality.
Comment from the President:
Mr MURAKAMI Yoshifumi, President and Director of TSUNEISHI GROUP (ZHOUSHAN) SHIPBUILDING INC. commented:
“The launch of this methanol dual-fuelled 5,900 TEU type container carrier marks a historic milestone for TZS. With a vision of creating a society where people and the environment coexist in harmony, we remain committed to contributing to a sustainable future through these initiatives.”
*1 : MT-FAST is an energy-saving device that improves propulsion efficiency by approximately 4% by regulating water flow through the installation of multiple fins in front of the propeller. It was developed jointly with MTI Co., Ltd., of the NYK Group.
