Protecting Coastal Ecosystems by Planting Mangroves in the Philippines

Continuing Tree Planting and Growth Monitoring

The TSUNEISHI Group is planting mangroves to help protect coastal ecosystems near Balamban, a town on the Philippine island of Cebu, where one of our shipyards is located. This hands-on initiative is being carried out by the employees of the Group subsidiary, TSUNEISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES (CEBU), Inc. The activity has been held annually since 2011, and to date, around 90,000 mangroves have been planted along this coastline.

Now, 15 years after these activities began, we took the opportunity to travel to Cebu to survey how well the mangroves we established themselves. We visited several planting sites together with Japanese botanical specialists and carefully examined which mangrove species were present, the growth of individual trees, and the mangrove density in each area.

The survey revealed that while some areas were growing as expected, growth was limited in others due to the impact of weather events such as typhoons. It underscored just how challenging — and how important — it is to take a long-term view. Going forward, we will use these findings to refine our planting and management plans to further promote the growth of mangrove forests.

Expanding Environmental Protection Efforts Across the Group

At CYCLE TREND INDUSTRIES PHILIPPINES INC. (CTI Phils), a recycling company handling non-ferrous and e-waste (waste from electronic devices), employees also joined a mangrove planting project in 2025. The company recovers, sorts, and processes various materials from electronic components and supplies them upstream in the supply chain, working towards building a more sustainable society.

In this year’s project, 8 employees from CTI Phils. joined 350 participants from 27 companies from the same industrial park in planting 2,025 mangrove trees along the coastline. Going forward, the company will continue to take an active part in volunteer initiatives that support environmental conservation.

The role of mangroves and hands-on environmental conservation

Compared to other plants, mangroves have robust leaves, absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, and store significant amounts of carbon in the soil, meaning they have considerable potential to help mitigate global warming. Moreover, the trees’ complex root systems (known as prop roots) can help create tidal flat ecosystems where diverse organisms can thrive. Mangroves also play a valuable role as natural barriers to prevent coastal erosion caused by high waves, making them one of the most suitable plants for preserving ecosystems.

Planting Together, Reflecting on Our Business and the Environment.

As a manufacturing group, the TSUNEISHI Group is working to reduce carbon dioxide emissions across all our operations. We are determined to help ensure that our natural environment is preserved for coming generations. That is why we also promote various other environmental protection activities through a range of community-based environmental initiatives.
