THI Continues Mangrove Planting Initiative Together with Local Community
7 March 2026 – TSUNEISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES (CEBU), Inc. (THI), the Philippine manufacturing base of TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd., carried out a mangrove tree-planting activity in Sitio Pondok, Pondol, Balamban, Cebu.
The initiative has been conducted continuously since 2011 to help protect the local coastal ecosystem. With this year’s activity included, approximately 100,000 mangrove trees have been planted to date.
A total of 278 participants took part in the activity, including employees from TSUNEISHI Group companies in the Philippines, members of local volunteer organisations, and barangay officials. Planting began at 7:30 a.m. during low tide under clear skies. Despite the muddy conditions, participants worked together to plant seedlings and contribute to the preservation of the coastal environment.

This year, 5,000 Bongalong seedlings (Avicennia rumphiana) were planted. In previous activities, Bakhaw (Rhizophora species) had primarily been used. However, based on the results of a mangrove survey conducted in 2025, which indicated that Avicennia species are better suited to the seaward environment, THI selected Bongalong seedlings for this year’s planting.
In addition, wooden protective frames were installed around each seedling as a new measure to help prevent them from being washed away by waves.

Mangroves play a vital role in reducing coastal damage caused by storm surges, providing habitats for marine life, improving water quality, and absorbing carbon dioxide. They are therefore an essential component in the preservation of coastal ecosystems.
THI will continue working together with local communities to promote environmental conservation activities and contribute to the realisation of a sustainable society.
